The third place we visited was Icy Strait Point. We arrived at 7AM and departed at 4PM on July 4, 2006. What a way to spend our Independence Day! We did not land in a port, but anchored out in the bay and were tethered to shore by a smaller boat. This was another interesting place. It is the only wilderness port in Alaska. The island has been the homeland of the Huna Tlingit Natives for thousands of years. It was the home to one of the world’s most productive salmon canneries. After a devastating fire, the cannery was rebuilt and reopened in 2004. Its halls are filled with unique family-owned shops, a museum, and a mid-1930’s cannery line display. We went on one excursion during our visit here on a motorized tram through an ancient forest and a beautiful beach.
