Normandy
Omaha Beach

We had the opportunity to visit Omaha Beach. The beach is located on the northern coast of France, facing the English Channel. This is one of the locations of the American wave of combat on D-Day during World War II. Because of difficulties in navigating the turbulent English Channel, and because of such unexpectedly strong defenses, heavy casualties were inflicted on the US troops as they landed.

When my tour group arrived here, it was high tide, so there was not much beach to see. There are absolutely no relics or objects left on the beach to show what happened here, only a modern looking memorial structure (statue) representing the wave of combat. On a bluff above the beach is the Normandy American Cemetery and four miles west of this beach is Pointe du Hoc, where remains many scars of the war.
