Normandy
Pointe du Hoc

La Pointe du Hoc is a cliff top location on the coast of Normandy. This cliff is situated between both Utah and Omaha beaches. The Germans set up huge guns to defend both beaches, which posed a huge threat of heavy casualties of those landing there. Early on D-Day, the Americans attacked Pointe du Hoc to gain control of the guns and possibly make it easier to land on the beaches later in the day. However, prior to the attack, the guns were moved to a location one mile away. After this site was secured, a patrol found the guns and was able to destroy them.

Pointe du Hoc now has a memorial and museum dedicated to the battle. Many of the original fortifications have been left in place. The site is speckled with an impressive number of bomb craters.

We were able to explore many of the bunkers and fortifications. I climbed around, in, and through as many as possible. Some rooms were so pitch black, I took pictures to try to navigate my way around. Pointe du Hoc really is an impressive site!
